The Raymond Loewy Edition is a series of five rugs commissioned by Edward Fields in 1952. Raymond Loewy, a Paris-born, US-based industrial designer, is celebrated for his broad range of design work from the late 1920s through the 1970s. Loewy is known for his iconic designs such as the Lucky Strike cigarette package, the slenderized Coca-Cola bottle, the streamlined Greyhound bus, as well as logos for Shell International, the US Postal Service, and many others. Loewy’s rug designs for Edward Fields feature organic patterns in natural and celestial motifs. Originally designed to introduce the concept of “area rugs” and break from the tradition of wall-to-wall carpet, the collection ultimately revolutionized the role of the carpet in home decor. The Raymond Loewy Edition is composed of five designs: Heavenly, Legend, Infinite Star, Stellar and Picnic Blanket. The most widely recognized design, Picnic Blanket, was ordered for the Kaufmann desert house in Palm Springs, one of the most iconic mid-century homes in the U.S.
