Interior Design: Patricia Urquiola
The Mandarin Oriental hotel is housed in the former Banco Hispano-Americano, an elegant mid-20th century building that belies the hotel’s playful interiors. A 2010 revamp focused on levels, texture, and colour, creating a light-hearted atmosphere.
Tai Ping rugs adorn the entranceway, lobby, bedrooms, and corridors, adding vibrancy to the modern space. A hand-tufted runner blooms in oranges, yellows, and blues on an illuminated, elevated corridor, beckoning the guest inside. Burnt orange suns are etched into a purple Tai Ping carpet in the lobby. The dining room tables and chairs sit upon a topographical rug of gold on white, reflecting the ceiling décor.
